Paleo Holiday Lessons

For an entire month, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, thousands of Americans knowingly over-eat foods that are bad for them. No I don't just mean on those particular days, but for the entire month. Why? From the day before Thanksgiving, when we bake the pies, until the day after Christmas, when we polish off pies, we have parties, cookies baking, gingerbread house making, and candies on every desk we walk by. We wash all this sugar and flour down with prepackaged hot chocolate and flavored lattes that come from drive-thrus. The more you activate your sweet tooth, the more it demands sweets.

Most of us are also dealing with a lot of stress too. What is the 'perfect' present for Grandma who has everything she needs? Will uncle Al, be drunk again this year at dinner? Fueds between family members, kids fighting over TV channels becasue it is too cold out. Too much weight on our shoulders.

The combination of bad food and stress makes havoc on our hormonal system and triggers us to store fat.

I fell into the trap and have learned lessons this year.
  1. People who are not close family members will receive homemade gifts made with my children. An activity that brings us closer together.
  2. People who are close family members, but not immediate family, will receive bigger homemade gifts.
  3. I will not stress out because of presents. I got each child two presents. It is not about how many things are under the tree, it is about being together.
  4. If I want to be in control of my dinner, I will have to make it. Next year, I will be the hostess. When people ask what they should bring, I will have a list of hunter-gatherer sides and desserts for them to choose from.
  5. I will keep a small bag of dried fruit in my pocket or purse. When faced with a sweet tooth and a bowl full of peanut butter cups, I will choose the fruit till I am satisfied.
  6. When dining at someone else's home, I will fill my plate with the most primal foods first and only leave room for small portions of "bad" foods that I will enjoy last.
  7. If I know I am having dinner at the in-laws and their idea of cooking is "open package, and microwave", I will eat light through out the day before hand and will drink plenty of fresh water to help flush my system
